<Councillor> - <Ward> – City of Ottawa,
110 Laurier Avenue W. Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1
Dear Councillor <_________>,
In light of the recent proposed cuts to culture outlined in the draft Budget 2009, I would like to voice my opposition to the sweeping and devastating cuts to arts funding and cultural programs.
The negative economic impact on the city will be incalculable. No longer will we be able boast about Ottawa's great quality of life that includes health care and social services, parks and recreational facilities as well as culture. Individuals need culture. Workers need culture. Families need culture.
The announcement of the draft budget has left the cultural community in Ottawa dismayed and disheartened. The proposed cuts will certainly cause many arts organizations to cancel programs, while some will fold altogether. Festivals, which create a sense of belonging and constitute a major tourist attraction, will be in jeopardy. Cuts to grants to local artists will mean many will no longer be able to pursue their art forms and may opt to relocate to cities that actually value their contribution and talent.
As a taxpayer, I want to live in a vibrant and creative city in which I can attend affordable shows and concerts; in which children are offered first-rate cultural and multicultural experiences; and in which citizens and visitors alike can enjoy top quality festivals. I ask that you reinstate the full amount allotted for the cultural sector and that you honour the commitments made by the City of Ottawa's 2006 Arts Investment Strategy. Increasing investment in the arts was the right thing to do then, and it remains the right thing to do now.
Sincerely,
<Your Name>
