Call for photographers
To welcome spring, arts&architecture would like to invite Ottawa photographers to submit their best flower/nature photographs for a group exhibition scheduled for May 5 - May 23, 2010, to run concurrent with the Ottawa Tulip Festival.
How to submit work:
Send an email to info@artsandarchitecture.ca with "Flower Show" in the subject line before the deadline of Sunday, April 11, 2010 and include:
" your name;
" up to three image entries in jpeg format, under 1MB each;
" each file should be titled with your name and the title of the image
We will contact artists by April 18, 2010 to let them know if their work was chosen for exhibition. Artists will then have until Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm to bring their finished print to the gallery.
Although priority will be given to Ottawa area photographers, international submissions will be considered.

Dates:
The work will be exhibited from May 5 - May 23. A vernissage will be held on Friday, May 7th from 7 - 10 pm.
Dimensions & framing:
Photographs can be a maximum size of 16 x 20 framed. Black 16 x 20 gallery frames can be loaned for exhibition purposes; if you will require gallery frame(s) please submit your request as soon as possible because there is a limited number of frames available for loan. If you chose to use your own frames, we encourage that you use black frames to give continuity to the exhibit.
All prints must come matted and mounted on mat board. Should photographs that are submitted with no mat and mounting board be sold during the exhibition, the gallery will mat and mount the print for the purchaser and will deduct the cost from the artist's portion of the sale (approx. $10).
Sale of artwork:
Images chosen for exhibition will be marked for sale. The gallery takes a 50% commission from all sales. Artists will receive a cheque after the exhibition ends, for any artwork sold. Prints that have not sold will be taken down and stored at the gallery for the artist to pick up.
About the gallery:
Arts&architecture is a photographic art gallery located in Old Ottawa South. The gallery opened in the summer of 2008 and has since hosted exhibitions of work by Ottawa area photographers including vernissages open to the public to celebrate the opening of each exhibition.

Blink gallery
CALL TO ARTISTS
Blink Artist Collective is currently accepting submissions for the 2010 exhibition season. Blink Gallery can be found in Header House, a small, stone NCC heritage building in Major's Hill Park, across the bridge from The National Gallery. Blink will be mounting another exciting series of one-week shows from June to September, which will feature the work of Blink artists, as well as showcase a variety of guest artists. Blink is encouraging artists of all disciplines to apply.
Please apply with a non-refundable application fee of $25.

Le Centre d'exposition L'Imagier
APPEL DE DOSSIERS 2011

Le Centre d'exposition L'Imagier invite les artistes qui désirent exposer dans le cadre de la programmation annuelle 2011 à faire parvenir leur dossier avant le 1er avril 2010. La programmation régulière débute en janvier et se termine en décembre.
Cette année, une attention particulière sera portée à la diversité des pratiques artistiques. Les démarches intégrant les nouveaux médias sont les bienvenues.
L'Imagier met à la disposition des artistes deux salles à l'architecture unique. Le Centre convie les artistes à soumettre un projet d'exposition pouvant occuper une des deux salles ou les deux. Les propositions d'expositions de groupe réunissant deux ou trois artistes sont également acceptées.
Les dossiers reçus seront soumis à un jury de pairs.

Coalition of New Canadians for Arts and Culture
Call to artists
The Coalition of New Canadians for Arts and Culture is organizing an Art Exhibition in May 2010 in Ottawa showcasing artworks that acknowledge and celebrate Diversity and Multiculturalism.
The exhibition will be at the Art Ottawa East (Shenkman Arts Centre) www.artsoe.ca and at the Patrick John Mills Contemporary Fine Art Gallery. www.patrickjohnmills.ca
Eligibility Criteria
The Exhibition is open to established and emerging artists. Artists must be New Canadians (meaning Canadians or permanent residents born in another country.)
The general guidelines for submitting artworks are as follows:
o Provide name, address, phone number, e-mail address and web site if available.
o Include Curriculum Vitae detailing experience and other relevant information.
o Submit digital files with a maximum of 10 artworks. These files must be in JPEG format and should be no less than 1 MB and should not exceed 3 MB in size.
o Include a description of works: media, size (inches: height x width), date and total price (taxes included).
o All works must have been finished within three years prior to submission and completed after May 2007.
o Provide a one-sentence statement describing the work submitted.
o All Media are accepted (two-dimensional works: paintings and works on paper including photographs). Experimental and mixed techniques are welcome.
o Submissions should be sent by: Wednesday, March 31, 2010

We will acknowledge submissions as received. If you do not hear from us within a few days, please resubmit. Do not send original artwork.
After the submissions have been reviewed to ensure compliance with eligibility criteria, a panel of 5 jurors will evaluate the digital files and select the artists to be invited to participate in the exhibition. Those chosen will then be asked to submit the original artwork represented in their digital file submission.
Only up to 4 to 6 artworks per artist will be accepted. Artworks should preferably have the same theme.
Works on canvas to be exhibited must also be secured on stretcher bars; framing is optional. However, if the painting is on paper, the work must be framed with glazing; i.e., glass or Plexiglas.
Loose, exposed, or unprotected paper works cannot be accepted.
Selection will take place in April 2010.

Fête de la culture
Un appel à la participation !
Qu'est-ce que la Fête de la culture ?
La Fête de la culture est un mouvement canadien assorti de la tenue d'un événement artistique et culturel. Elle s'adresse à toutes les collectivités et à tous les citoyens et citoyennes qui croient en l'importance de sensibiliser le public au rôle que jouent les arts et la culture dans la vie de tous les jours. La Fête de la culture marque également une collaboration croissante entre les provinces canadiennes, dans le but d'accroître la participation et les connaissances des Canadiens et des Canadiennes en tout ce qui a trait au milieu des arts et de la culture dans leurs collectivités. Le principe fondamental de la Fête de la culture vise à donner lieu à des activités professionnelles oui non, représentatives de notre mosaïque géographique, culturelle et autochtone.
Quand ?
Le dernier week-end de septembre, chaque année, citoyens, citoyennes, groupes ou villes entières ont l'occasion d'inviter le public à participer gratuitement à leurs activités et à vivre
leur expérience, qu'il s'agisse d'une porte ouverte ou d'une démonstration.
Cette année, la Fête de la culture en Ontario se déroulera du 24 au 26 septembre 2010.
Pourquoi la Fête de la culture est-elle essentielle en Ontario ?
Les collectivités culturelles et artistiques de l'Ontario étaient la recherche d'un véhicule qui leur permettrait de travailler ensemble à la promotion des arts et de la culture auprès des résidents et résidentes de leur province.
La Fête de la culture est le véhicule parfait ! En travaillant ensemble, nous réussirons à mettre en vedette la culture vibrante qui anime l'Ontario, à encourager ses résidents et résidentes à faire l'essai de nouvelles activités et à célébrer les arts et la culture dans leurs collectivités.
Types d'activités visées par la Fête de la culture
Une activité peut prendre la forme d'une " visite en coulisses ", d'une démonstration à des groupes scolaires en visite, d'un atelier ou d'une conférence. Des artistes peuvent choisir de convier le public à assister à une répétition, alors que d'autres inviteront le public à visiter leur studio. Une telle activité peut également mettre en scène une occasion d'en apprendre davantage sur un patrimoine culturel particulier.
Il est possible d'inclure des activités existantes au programme provincial de la Fête de la culture, si elles sont gratuites.
La Fête de la culture nous permet d'aider les gens à mieux connaître :
" le rôle des arts et de la culture qui vient forger notre qualité de vie;
" les collectivités, artistes et agents culturels de cultures diverses et autochtones qui créent cette mosaïque unique à l'Ontario;
" les occasions de participer à des activités culturelles dans les collectivités de toute la province;
" l'impact économique des arts et de la culture en Ontario;
" la valorisation personnelle ressentie en laissant libre cours à notre propre créativité.

Vous devez être en mesure d'offrir au moins une expérience culturelle gratuite, interactive et engageante qui sera ouverte au public durant le dernier week-end de septembre. Veuillez inscrire votre activité à la base de données de la Fête de la culture, à www.culturedays.ca avant le 20 avril.
Qui participe à la présentation de la Fête de la culture ?
Chaque province a mis sur pied son propre Comité de réflexion provincial formé de bénévoles pour contribuer à la cohérence et à la promotion de la Fête de la culture provinciale. Un Comité directeur national dirige la campagne de sensibilisation de la Fête de la culture auprès du public canadien (de juin à septembre). Cela comprend la mise de l'avant de ressources pour les organisateurs et organisatrices d'activités partout au Canada, la mise sur pied d'un site Internet de la Fête de la culture, une base de données des activités inscrites, de même que la coordination des commanditaires et des partenaires nationaux.
À quoi ressemblera la Fête de la culture en Ontario ?
En Ontario, la Fête de la culture fournit l'occasion de :
" susciter l'intérêt des gens pour la culture vibrante qui anime les collectivités de l'Ontario;
" mobiliser les Ontariens et Ontariennes en les incitant à prendre part à de nouvelles activités artistiques ou à visiter un événement culturel;
" soutenir la collaboration entre les groupes artistiques et culturels et les partenaires communautaires (autochtones, métis, de cultures et patrimoines distincts);
" créer une tradition de liens solides entre tous les participants et participantes;
" encourager chaque personne à explorer sa propre créativité;
" mettre en évidence la culture de l'Ontario sur la scène nationale.

" Identifier une activité qui peut être présentée au public dans le cadre de la Fête de la culture -- il peut s'agir d'une activité qui existe déjà;
" S'assurer que cette activité est gratuite, ouverte au public et qu'elle offre un volet interactif ou participatif;

The New Art Festival

Applications are now being accepted for Ottawa's major, juried, outdoor, visual art festival. With 16 years of growing a big, enthusiastic audience for this show, the New Art Festival changed course last year and became a JURIED show. The NAF did this to create a networking opportunity for serious visual artists who want to exhibit their work in a high quality atmosphere where it's about art NOT product.

Welcome to your 2nd Ottawa Art Expo, the Capital's premier fine art event and the largest indoor art show in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec! This fall, thousands of art lovers will stream into The St. Elias Centre on the River Road, across from Mooney's Bay to browse the works of over 50 talented Canadian artists at the Ottawa Art Expo 2010.
The Ottawa Art Expo 2010 will also be giving each exhibiting artist 4 complementary tickets to our fun and fabulous Friday night gala and awards show. One ticket is for yourself and the others may be given to family, friends or clients.
Because of an overwhelming amount of enquiries, booths are limited to singles only. By doing this, the expo can have more high quality artists represented at the event.

Call for Exhibition Proposals
The Ottawa School of Art (OSA) is now accepting proposals of current or proposed work for the 2011 exhibition season for both its downtown campus gallery and Orleans campus gallery.
Artists working in all media are invited to submit proposals. Group exhibition proposals are also accepted. Artists should submit only one proposal and should indicate the gallery in which they wish their work to be exhibited (i.e. downtown or Orleans). Exhibition proposals can be submitted for consideration at both galleries.
The deadline for submitting artwork is Friday, April 23, 2010. All work must arrive no later than 4:30 p.m. local time (EST) in order to be considered for submission.

The Ottawa Theatre Challenge
Calling all theatre companies!
Celebrate International World Theatre day! The Ottawa Theatre Challenge gives you a platform for inspiring the muses and the audience with the very essence of theatre. Join a Company of Fools at this 10th annual Contest of Creation at the National Arts Centre's Fourth Stage on Saturday March 27 for an amazing evening of creativity.
Not sure what happens at the Ottawa Theatre Challenge? Fun, fun and more fun. 48 hours prior to the Theatre Challenge on March 27th -- which means Thursday March 25th - your theatre company brings two inspiration items to the party. Last year's winners -- Eddie May Mysteries -- will be choosing the items, and when you register with us, we'll tell you what they are!
Everybody at the party exchanges items, and then you then spend two days writing and rehearsing your piece. On March 27 each of the participating companies presents their efforts to the public. Just to keep things interesting, we have a mock panel of judges (all of whom accept bribes) who will award everyone a prize, and give one lucky theatre company the coveted Rubber Chicken Award -- which means you get bragging rights as best theatre company in Ottawa for the period of 1 year.
There are no costs to register. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to last year's winner's charity of choice. Eddie May Mysteries has chosen to donate to the Canadian Improv Games. (www.improv.ca)

Le Réseau TVA, TFO et les producteurs des séries documentaires Destination Nord'Ouest I et II sont heureux de lancer leur nouvelle aventure : La ruée vers l'or.
La recherche s'amorce aujourd'hui pour trouver dix participant(e)s prêts à vivre la grande aventure de la course folle vers l'or du Klondike au Yukon. Les candidats sélectionnés devront parcourir des montagnes enneigées, traverser une nature sauvage loin de toute civilisation ou, à bord d'un radeau de fortune, descendre de tumultueuses rivières et ainsi reconstituer la folle épopée de la ruée vers l'or ! Qui en aura le courage, de l'Alaska au Yukon, habillés et équipés comme les prospecteurs d'or de 1898 ?
Parrainés par l'auteur Georges-Hébert Germain, ils attraperont la fièvre de l'or !
Au cours de cette série documentaire d'aventure de huit épisodes d'une heure, ces aventuriers des temps modernes seront, une fois de plus, parrainés par l'auteur et historien Georges-Hébert Germain. Nos prospecteurs devront relever de nombreux défis en plus d'être soumis à de rudes épreuves. De Montréal jusqu'à Dawson City au Yukon, ce difficile périple, au coeur d'une nature sauvage et imprévisible, sera rempli d'imprévus et de paysages majestueux. En train, en bateaux, à cheval, à pieds et sur des radeaux de fortune, le long trajet jusqu'à destination sera d'une rare intensité. Avec peu d'accès routiers et de contacts avec la civilisation, les 10 candidats devront adopter une discipline d'enfer et une prudence de tous les instants. Les montagnes, la neige, le froid, les animaux sauvages et les cours d'eau, tumultueux et inhospitaliers, offriront des obstacles constants aux chercheurs d'or.
Le périple du Klondike exigera des participants de respecter les règles d'autrefois et de reconstituer le plus fidèlement possible la grande aventure des chercheurs d'or de 1898, partis faire fortune pour améliorer leur sort. Munis d'une force physique et mentale exceptionnelles, les 10 participants n'auront pas la vie facile. Le froid, les nuits blanches, les blessures et la peur feront partie de leur quotidien. Mais, malgré ces nombreuses difficultés, ils vivront une expérience humaine, unique et merveilleuse qui les transformera à jamais. Réussiront-ils à trouver de l'or ?
La reconstitution de cette grande histoire de la fin du 19ème siècle, dont les faits saillants sont encore frais dans les mémoires, prendra son envol à la fin du mois de mai et se terminera à la fin du mois d'août 2010. La ruée ver l'or sera diffusée sur les ondes de TFO et de TVA au cours de la saison 2010 - 2011.

- Être âgé de 19 ans et plus;
- partager un intérêt marqué pour l'histoire, le goût de l'aventure, le dépassement de soi et les défis;
- être disponible de la fin du mois de mai jusqu'à la fin du mois d'août 2010;

Spark Box Studio
Spring/Summer Residency Award
Beginning your career as an emerging artist can be tough, which is why Spark Box Studio is offering FREE RESIDENCIES to fine art students and emerging artists. This residency opportunity is a unique way for young and emerging artists to cultivate new ideas, access a rich library of arts resources, learn about career-building opportunities, and develop an understanding of the art world from a business perspective.
About the Award
Four emerging artists will receive a one-week residency, 10 will receive a two day residency and 30 will receive one day at our Open Studio in Prince Edward County. The selected applicants will be given studio space to work in as well as access to Spark Box Studio's equipment and resources. Here they can learn about printing techniques, focus on their own projects and have access to career guidance from local community members. Applicants staying at Spark Box Studio will given living quarters at the Spark Box residency. The residency offers shared kitchen and bathroom with private bedrooms (food will not be provided).
Applying for the Residency Award gives artists the opportunity to practice an essential business skill in the art world: the application process.
How Do I Apply?
Any emerging artist living in Ontario, between the ages of 19-29, is invited to apply for the Spark Box Studio Residency Award.
Awards will be made based on the quality and completeness of the applications. Applicants will be juried by a group of artists and local business leaders.
Apply by March 1, 2010 to be considered for the Award.
Every applicant will be offered a 10% discount off the regular price of our Open Studio, Workshops or Residency Program.

ART LOCATION ET VENTE : RECHERCHE DE BENEVOLES !
ART location et vente, un service offert par la Galerie d'art d'Ottawa est à la recherche de nouveaux bénévoles. Les heures de bénévolat sont, du lundi au samedi, de 11 h à 14 h, ou de 14 h à 17 h. Les heures peuvent être réparties sur une semaine, deux semaines ou à tous les mois. Les bénévoles sont responsables des activités de la boutique : la location et la vente d'oeuvres d'art, l'accrochage, le marketing et les communications, trouver de nouveaux artistes, et plus encore. Une expérience en arts visuels ou un intérêt marqué pour les arts est un atout apprécié. Le bénévolat à ART location et vente constitue une excellente occasion de rencontrer des personnes passionnées par les arts tout en travaillant dans le contexte d'une galerie.
Située à même les locaux de la Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, ART location et vente est une galerie, dirigée par des bénévoles, qui souhaite faire connaître le travail d'artistes contemporains de la région de la capitale nationale par la vente, la location et l'exposition de leurs oeuvres. Les oeuvres sont consignées à la collection après sélection par un jury et les artistes sont invités à proposer de nouvelles oeuvres tout au long de l'année. Les profits générés vont au Fonds d'acquisition d'oeuvres d'art de la Galerie d'art d'Ottawa.

Le programme Articulation est de retour avec ses ateliers sur la rédaction de critiques d'art. Ce programme donnera l'occasion aux auteurs, en herbe et chevronnés, d'apprendre d'importants critiques d'art canadiens.

Puisque la critique d'art est une manière d'aborder l'art par rapport à des enjeux sociohistoriques et politico-économiques plus vastes, les participants de cet atelier passeront en revue des argumentaires d'articles et de comptes rendus, en critiqueront et en rédigeront.

Le samedi 17 avril (en français), 10 h à 16 h
À quoi sert la critique d'art ? Pourquoi est-elle si peu polémique au Canada ? L'atelier débutera par un historique de cette discipline. Dans un second temps, Mavrikakis expliquera comment il envisage son travail de critique. Puis, il analysera des critiques publiées sur deux expositions à l'affiche dans la région.

life drawing classes
arts&architecture gallery is now offering ongoing life drawing classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30 in the gallery studio. A 5-class session costs $100.00 including taxes. Basic drawing materials are used; participants may bring their own materials or purchase what they need at the gallery. Class sizes are small and include both beginner and experienced artists.
The next life drawing session is scheduled for Wednesday nights starting March 17 - April 14.
Deadline for registration is March 10
Registration requires a $50.00 deposit with the remaining $50.00 due on the first day of class. A deposit for registration can be made by phone with credit card or in person at the gallery. arts&architecture accepts cash, debit, credit card and cheque. Free parking is available beside and behind the gallery.

What do Pablo Picasso, Emily Carr and Claude Monet have in common? They all drew cartoons! Come learn this art form of the Masters from Sheree Bradford-Lea, Cartoonist and Mixed Media Artist. Emphasis is on line drawing, composition, character building and storytelling. The eight week, Wednesday night course in 'Cartooning Fundamentals' is starting April 21, 2010.

Free Persian Dance Classes
Learn to move your arms gracefully, use your face expressively, and tell a story via Persian Dance. An art form that promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being, Persian dance helps you walk on the dance floor with grace, energy, and confidence. Women of all ages and abilities are welcome to join. Those interested, please contact Maria Sabaye via email msabaye@yahoo.ca or phone (613)271-3036. The classes are offered free of charge (women only) at Nepean Creative Arts Centre on Saturday afternoons.
Maria Sabaye Moghaddam has sought Persian dance training in Canada, Iran, and the US as well as training in a variety of world dances such as Kathak, Bollywood, and Flamenco in Toronto and Ottawa.
Maria founded Bahar Ensemble in 2002 in Toronto. She has had numerous performances in various artistic and cultural events and appeared on Rogers Television. She holds Persian dance classes for both youth and adults in Ottawa. Maria has also undertaken research on Iranian dance and dancers and published many articles including one in Encyclopaedia Iranica. She was the dance director for "Tirgan" festival (www.tirgan.ca) held at the Harbourfront Centre in July 2008. Maria is a member International Council of Dance, a worldwide dance organization recognized by UNESCO.

A new initiative proposed by members of the Board of Trustees of Galerie SAW Gallery, Free School is a free workshop and lecture series geared toward professional visual and media artists working in the Ottawa and Gatineau regions. Providing an exceptional opportunity to delve into a curriculum that few learning institutions deliver, Free School features leaders in various fields related to the arts, who will speak to artists in practical terms on subjects ranging from crating and conservation to working with curators and running a studio. Informative and accessible to a wide range of artists from emerging to established, this series is meant to enrich your artistic career all the while providing a unique networking opportunity.
